What is Email?

Email is short for Electronic Mail. It enables you to send messages and attachments to another email user. In order for this to work you will need an email address attached to a domain name.

Example;

my.name@mydomainname.com

The first part is your own name and the part after the @ symbol is the domain name.

There are two popular ways of receiving email. POP or webmail are the more commonly used methods but larger companies with their own internal network may opt to run their own mail servers.

POP email is normally downloaded from a mailbox to your computer where it can be kept and read offline. To do this a program such as Microsoft Outlook Express will be required. This method requires setting up and you will need to be provided with the correct settings by your email provider.

Webmail is a accessed via your internet browser and requires you to be online. With this method emails stay in your mailbox untill you delete them. One advantage of webmail is that you can access it remotely from other computers in different locations.

Email is a versatile, popular and valuable tool for business. Anyone using emails should be aware of abusive elements such as SPAM and viruses. These are explained elsewhere in the FAQ section.
